Skin laxity, or loosening of the skin, begins to be more noticeable as we age. The toned skin we enjoyed in younger days eventually gives way to wrinkles, sagginess, and droopiness. Other causes of skin laxity include over exposure to the sun, significant weight loss, and genetics. We may first look at over-the-counter creams to reduce crepey skin and wrinkles. Products containing glycerin and hyaluronic acids moisturize the skin. Products with retinoids, peptides, and alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate and increase collagen production. Collagen helps to firm the skin, diminishes the appearance of fine lines, and promotes elasticity. These products may initially produce some results.

Temporary results

Non-surgical treatments performed by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist may produce some noticeable results, possibly after a few treatments. Many treatments stimulate collagen growth, which helps diminish those signs of aging. The skin will look more toned and refreshed. For most people, the results will be temporary.

Ultherapy uses ultrasound to lift, tighten, and tone sagging skin on the face and neck. Exilis therapy can be used on the face, neck, and body to tone and tighten the skin while reducing unwanted fat cells. Collagen and elastin production is increased and strengthened. Vivace RF microneedling is a treatment used with radiofrequency energy to improve skin laxity on the face and neck. The plus side of these non-surgical treatments is that there is less down time and a faster recovery than with surgical procedures. However, these non-invasive treatments will not yield the same results as a facelift, eyelid surgery, breast lift, or tummy tuck.

Long-lasting results

Facial plastic surgery is the most effective way to tighten skin on the face and neck. During a facelift, facial muscles can be lifted to help bring them back to a more youthful position. Fat from the face, jowls, and neck can be sculpted or redistributed. Excess skin will be trimmed away as the skin is repositioned over the uplifted contours.

Since a facelift only addresses the lower two thirds of the face, a patient may choose to have other procedures at the same time. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper eyelids and bagginess under the eyes. This outpatient procedure can help patients look more youthful, alert, and refreshed.

During the aging process, the breasts lose firmness and elasticity. A breast lift tightens surrounding tissue, removes excess fat, and contours the breast. Many women choose to have a breast lift after major life changes including pregnancy, breastfeeding, or a dramatic weight loss.

tummy tuck can get rid of a tummy pooch that has not responded to diet and exercise. Damaged abdominal walls are repaired and excess skin is trimmed away. This procedure helps women who have recently given birth achieve a slimmer and more contoured stomach.

These surgical procedures are meant to have long-lasting results. Some are considered permanent if the patient maintains a stable weight. However, they do not stop the aging process. We can control some of the factors that contribute to skin laxity, but we cannot change our genetic disposition.
