HOW DOES BREAST SYMMETRY WORK?

Breast symmetry surgery works in a similar way to breast augmentation; however, rather than focusing on increasing the bust size, the main goal of the surgery is to align the breasts so that they appear more symmetrical. Breast symmetry surgery may include breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction. These surgical techniques allow Dr. Keusch to access the breast tissue so they can resculpt it into a more symmetrical appearance. Excess skin is usually removed during this surgery to accommodate the new shape; additionally, the nipple may be repositioned to align with the new breasts. The entire procedure takes a couple of hours to perform, during which the patient will be under general anesthesia.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST SYMMETRY?

You’re a good candidate for breast symmetry if you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts due to asymmetry (one breast is much larger or lower than the other, your breasts appear flat, etc). All patients should be nonsmokers with realistic expectations for their procedure.

WHAT RESULTS WILL I SEE?

Most patients can see results about 6 to 8 weeks after surgery, when a majority of swelling has subsided. Final results can take up to a year to be visible, as minor swelling may take place over this time. Breast symmetry surgery can produce excellent results, with many patients feeling incredibly satisfied with their new appearance.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?

Most of the recovery takes place over the course of 6 to 8 weeks. During the first week, you should expect to spend plenty of time resting and recuperating at home. You may be cleared to return to work after the first or second week, depending on the nature of your job. After a few weeks, you may be able to wear normal bras as opposed to surgical compression bras. You may be cleared for physical activity at the six-week mark, depending on your doctor’s advice.
