Is it possible to address the telltale signs of aging during an easy lunch hour appointment?  Yes!  Now those fine lines and wrinkles that make us feel less attractive can be treated with Sculptra Aesthetic.  This injectable filler was previously approved for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial folds or smile lines.  Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center has been offering this treatment for some time with great success.  The FDA recently expanded Sculptra’s use to include the treatment of fine lines and other facial wrinkles.  This gives our patients a new option to consider.

How is Sculptra different?

Many dermal fillers currently available are composed of hyaluronic acid gel.  Sculptra is different because it’s a bio-stimulatory filler that triggers the body’s own natural collagen production.  Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a strong polymer gel.  Injections of Sculptra stimulate the tissues to produce collagen locally to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  The body continues to produce collagen for up to twelve weeks, slowly and gradually improving skin tone and adding volume.  Patients may see longer lasting fullness with Sculptra than with hyaluronic fillers.

Why is collagen important?

Collagen is a protein that occurs naturally in the body.  It is the support structure for the skin that gives it strength and elasticity.  It is also found in bones, tendons, and ligaments.  Unfortunately, we start to lose collagen by our thirties as a natural part of the aging process.  Post-menopausal women experience a dramatic decrease in collagen production.  Loss of collagen results in wrinkles, folds, and sagging skin.  Other factors that contribute to a decline in collagen production include exposure to UV light and smoking.

Topical creams that contain collagen do not increase the body’s collagen levels or stimulate the production of new collagen.  Since collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed through the skin, it is unlikely these products make a difference.

Natural results achieved over time

Unlike hyaluronic fillers which produce more immediate results, Sculptra works over time.  The body restores lost volume by producing its own collagen.  Results are very natural, and the patient looks rejuvenated without the puffy appearance that is sometimes a consequence of hyaluronic acid fillers.  Sculptra is considered to be semi-permanent while hyaluronic acid fillers may last 10-12 months, on average.

Treatments

Treatments generally take about twenty minutes to perform.  Depending on the extent of the areas being treated, a series of injections may be recommended.  There is no downtime, but patients should expect slight swelling and bruising following injection.  Some patients may develop small lumps under the skin.  In clinical studies, these numbers were low and most resolved without further treatment.
