The tender areas under the eyes are often among the first parts of the face to show visible signs of aging.  The skin in that area is thinner than other parts of the face and has a softer texture.  It contains fewer oil glands, less collagen, and is a challenging area to treat.

In the past, special eye creams were often used.  Even moisturizers meant for the rest of the face were too strong for this delicate area.  Some people noticed modest improvements with these topical creams but wanted something more.

Now there is exciting news for those who wanted longer lasting results! The FDA has just approved Juvederm Volbella XC for the treatment of undereye hollows in patients aged 21 and older.  Rejuvenating these sensitive areas beneath the eye, known as infraorbital hollows, is frequently a top concern for patients who want to treat facial aging.

A problem area

Age-related changes in the undereye area include less collagen production, loss of elasticity, and the loss of mid-facial fat pad volume.  Fine lines and wrinkles accentuate poor skin tone and an imbalance in the distribution of soft tissue.  Some people develop dark circles under the eyes which can convey tiredness, sadness, and even an angry disposition.  This may lead to an entirely inaccurate perception of the person’s mood and personality.

Signs of facial aging can have adverse effects on how we view ourselves, and how we think we are perceived by others.  Youthful, natural looking features tend to create more positive feelings and better self-esteem.  The eyes are an expressive part of the face and are often key to expressing our feelings and emotions.

What is Juvederm Volbella XC?

Juvederm Volbella XC is an injectable dermal filler composed of a thin hyaluronic acid gel.  It was previously approved to add volume and fullness to thin or aging lips.  It was also effective in treating wrinkles around the mouth often referred to as smoker’s lines.  In clinical trials, Juvederm Volbella was found to be safe and effective in treating moderate to severe infraorbital hollowing.  The hyaluronic acid increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture.  Dermal fillers actually stimulate new collagen production.

Treatment and results

As with most injectable dermal fillers, treatments with Juvederm Volbella takes up to 30 minutes.  This makes it easy to fit into your day.  Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center uses chillers to make the procedure more comfortable and reduce bruising.

There is no real downtime, although patients should expect mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness at the injection site.  This generally resolves in a few days.  Optimal results are visible in about a week.
