Many people have troublesome areas of stubborn body fat they would like to eliminate.  These are the bulges, fat rolls, and muffin tops that never seem to respond to modifications in diet or any amount of exercise.  There are surgical procedures that can help, but the cost of such procedures and the necessary down time required are not always attractive options.  Non-invasive body contouring to address problem fat has been around for a few years.  The big benefits of these treatments is no surgery and zero down time.  The most popular procedures involve destroying the fat cells by heating them or freezing them.  While the goals may be similar, there are distinct differences in the treatments.  Here is a comparison of two of the main treatments.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting was cleared by the FDA for use in 2010 in the love handle region.  The treatment became more popular as it was approved for use in additional areas.  Targeted fat cells are destroyed by freezing, and over time the body eliminates them.  Special applicators are used to suction the fatty areas, and treatments last for 35-60 minutes.  The fat cells must be massaged after the applicator is removed.  Only one area at a time is treated.  Some of the minor side effects include mild swelling, numbness, and tingling.  Some of the more bothersome side effects experienced by patients include pain, discomfort, and bruising in the treated area.  Results can appear uneven or lumpy.

SculpSure

SculpSure is a newer treatment that was cleared by the FDA in 2015.  Sometimes referred to as WarmSculpting, this procedure uses laser energy to heat and destroy fat cells without affecting the skin surface.  SculpSure can be used on the belly, love handles, back, inner and outer thighs, and under the chin.  Up to four areas can be treated at the same time.  Treatments can be fully customized for the patient’s needs.  Most patients can go about their normal routine afterwards, as there are no unpleasant side effects.

SculpSure vs. CoolSculpting

While both SculpSure and CoolSculpting are non-surgical body contouring treatments, they approach their processes in different ways. SculpSure uses laser heat energy to reduce up to 24% treated fat cells; CoolSculpting uses freezing energy to reduce fat cells by up to 23% with freezing energy.

Why SculpSure is the Better Choice

Dr. Cristina Keusch offers SculpSure to her patients.  Candidates for the procedure should be in good general health and have realistic expectations.  SculpSure is not a weight loss treatment.  Candidates should be within 20 pounds of their ideal weight.  A healthy lifestyle and weight maintenance are necessary to retain desired results.  It is not for use on pregnant women.

If you’re looking for a quicker body contouring treatment that’s still affordable, SculpSure may be the better choice for you. Here are a few additional reasons why you should pick SculpSure over CoolSculpting:

  • SculpSure can treat up to 4 areas at once and is offered at a discount price when bundling more areas together. Coolsculpting can only treat 1 area at a time and is a slower, more expensive method of non-surgical fat removal.
  • SculpSure can be performed in as little as 25 minutes, while CoolSculpting takes about an hour to perform.
  • SculpSure doesn’t use suction technology to deliver its body-contouring benefits, which means there’s less bruising and swelling than with CoolSculpting.
  • SculpSure is much more comfortable than CoolSculpting, as it doesn’t require suctioning or concentrated freezing energy at the treatment site.
  • SculpSure can deliver skin tightening through the use of heat when destroying fat cells, while CoolScultping can leave pockets and rippling.

What can patients expect with SculpSure?

A SculpSure treatment takes 25 minutes.  Initially there is a cool sensation which keeps the skin comfortable.  The patient will feel a warm sensation as the laser cycles on and off, raising the temperature of the targeted fat cells.  Over a period of about 12 weeks, the body eliminates the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system.  These fat cells will not return.  Most patients will need a series of treatments for optimal results but may begin to see some results 6 weeks after treatment.  An added benefit is that patients may experience skin tightening, as SculpSure treatments encourage the production of collagen in the treated area.
