According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation surgery is the leading cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the U.S.  It’s an excellent solution for women who want to increase the size of their bust or achieve a more symmetrical appearance.  Many patients report feeling more confident about their appearance following breast augmentation surgery.

The surgery involves placing breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles.  Implants may be filled with sterile saline or silicone gel.  Implant size can be a challenging decision for some patients.  Women are accustomed to thinking about their breasts in terms of cup size.  That actually is subjective and can vary, depending on the manufacturer of the bra.  Breast implants are not sized the same way as bras.  Implants are measured in cubic centimeters (cc).  Most women are not able to imagine how cubic centimeters would translate on their bodies.  They are looking to enhance their breast size.  The question is by how much?

Be happy with the results.

Choosing a correctly sized implant is essential if a woman is to be happy with the final results.  No one wants to undergo a revision surgery because they were dissatisfied with the outcome.  A woman’s goal should be results that look natural and in the right proportion for her body size and shape.  Bodies are all different, so the surgeon can help guide the patient in achieving their optimal result.

Factors to consider

Age – Breasts tend to sag as we age because supporting ligaments lose elasticity.  Implants don’t prevent the breasts from sagging.  In fact, implants that are too large may cause additional sagging.  A breast lift may be a better choice for patients who want to regain the volume and perkiness they once had.  Breasts can also change during pregnancy, so the patient may choose to wait until childbearing is finished.

Fitness – Large implants may interfere with playing a sport or continuing an exercise routine.  Unintended consequences may be back pain or discomfort from breasts that are too large and cumbersome.  Women who run as part of their exercise routine should carefully consider the impact of large breast implants.

Body type – Choosing the size of implants depends on the patient’s body frame.  The width of the chest and shoulders, current breast size, and the condition of the breast tissue are major considerations.  For implants to look natural, they need to be in the right scale with the rest of the body.

A good candidate for breast augmentation surgery is a healthy individual with no history of high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, or other health conditions that would put them at risk during surgery.  The candidate should have realistic expectations for their procedure and understand the recovery process.
