An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a surgery that corrects sagging eyelids. Fatty deposits that create those bags under the lower lids can also be removed. The results are a younger, fresher appearance that reflects across the patient’s face. Rejuvenated eyelids are not just for women. The procedure is also popular among men.
As we age, the thinner, sensitive skin around the eyes loses elasticity, giving way to fine lines and wrinkles that make people look weary and fatigued. Eyelid surgery can restore the lids to a more youthful appearance. Laser resurfacing of the lower eyelid can be performed in the same session to reduce crepiness and give a smoother skin texture.
Patients can opt to have both upper and lower lids done at the same time, or they may need only an upper or lower eyelid lift. The following are different options available:
Upper Blepharoplasty
Aging and droopy skin can sag over the upper part of the eye, making it look hooded. An upper eye lift can dramatically open up the eye. Excess skin is removed, and muscles and ligaments that have lost tone over time are tightened. An upper eye lift cannot stop the aging process, but results generally last five to seven years.
Lower Blepharoplasty
A lower blepharoplasty specifically addresses drooping lower eyelids, excess skin, under-eye bags and puffiness, and fine lines and wrinkles in the area under the eye. Hollow areas beneath the eye can be plumped up by repositioning excess fatty tissue. This surgery produces long lasting results. Most patients never need additional surgical enhancements.
Quadruple Blepharoplasty
A combined upper and lower eyelid lift is called quadruple blepharoplasty. Both upper and lower eyelids are rejuvenated at the same time, so there is a single recovery period. Laser resurfacing is often combined with this procedure for optimal results, and can provide amazing, long lasting results for many patients.
Functional Blepharoplasty
An additional type of eyelid surgery is a functional blepharoplasty. Some patients may require an upper eyelid lift if their eyelids begin obscuring their field of vision. The skin of the upper lids rests across the lashes and interferes with the person’s ability to see. If the procedure is deemed medically necessary to improve function, the surgery is no longer considered cosmetic. In these cases, insurance may pay for the surgery.
Is eyelid surgery right for you?
Because the skin of the eyelids is thinner, it often exhibits signs of aging faster than other areas of the face. Sun damage over the years also contributes to more rapid aging of this delicate area of the face. Dr. Cristina Keusch, a board certified plastic surgeon, performs many eyelid surgeries each year at Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center. She will discuss the best options for patients based on their individual needs. If you are considering an eyelid lift, contact us today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Keusch.
