Many women deal with significant breast sagging as they age.  Support tissue stretches over time and loses tone.  Skin loses its youthful elasticity.  Not only do these breast changes affect the way women feel about their bodies, but heavy breasts can be painful.  It may be difficult to find a comfortable bra that offers enough support, especially when actively exercising.  Now a relatively new surgical procedure called internal bra can provide needed internal support and lift for women with droopy breasts or heavy implants.

Why do breasts sag?

There are several reasons why a woman may develop sagging breasts.  Weight gain over time adds fatty tissue to the breasts, which increases tension on the ligaments and support tissue.  This results in stretching and loss of shape and tone.  Breast changes during pregnancy and nursing can negatively affect those same ligaments.  Genetics, or family heredity, plays a part in the size and shape of breasts.  Women with any of these issues or breast implants that have shifted position or “bottomed out” can benefit from the extra support an internal bra offers.

What is an internal bra?

Dr. Cristina Keusch recommends two types of internal bras.

  •   GalaFLEX Scaffold – This is a bioresorbable scaffold that acts as a framework for collagen and elastin.  The newly formed tissue provides strength, support, and stability.  The scaffold naturally dissolves over 18-24 months.
  •   Meso BioMatrix – This surgical mesh is strong, supportive, and reinforcing.  It provides structural and mechanical support for weak, soft breast tissue.

Who can benefit from internal bra surgery?

What is surgery and recovery like?

A facelift is performed under general anesthesia.  Incisions are made around the ears, in the hairline, and underneath the chin.  Tissue below the skin is contoured and facial muscles are repositioned.  Excess fat may be removed through liposuction.  The skin is tightened, extra skin is trimmed away, and incisions are closed.

Patients should expect to feel mild to moderate discomfort and tightness post-surgery.  There will be some swelling and bruising for several weeks.  Patients may usually return to work sometime in the second week after their procedure.

What results are expected from my facelift?

Candidates should be in good general health with breasts that have significantly drooped or sagged.  An internal bra works to provide added support and longevity for women having a breast lift.  An internal bra can help prevent problems with breast implants including the “double bubble” appearance.

What is recovery like?

Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are to be expected for the first week.  It’s recommended that the patient schedule a week off from work to rest and recover.  Some physical activities may be resumed after 3-4 weeks.  Patients should remember that an internal bra is not meant to replace a regular bra, especially when exercising.
