Breast implant removal, known as explant surgery, has become more popular in recent years. A growing percentage of women who once had breast implants are now desiring to return to a more natural look. Implant removal is not just for older patients. Younger women, after having implants for a decade or two, are deciding on removal surgery. So, are smaller breasts now in vogue?
While the American Society of Plastic Surgeons hasn’t called this a trend, they do acknowledge that women choose implant removal for several reasons. What was desired by a woman in her 20s or 30s may no longer be desired as she ages. The decisions are highly personal.
Reasons to Remove Implants
The reason to remove breast implants generally falls into one of the following categories:
- Aesthetic Concerns – Preferences change over time, and women may simply change their minds. As women age, some may decide the size of their implants is no longer appropriate for their stage of life. Their perception of body image has changed, and now they want to restore their natural breast size and appearance. Women may feel their implants are out of proportion to the rest of their body, as pregnancy or weight fluctuations have altered their figure. Other women may still desire implants but want to opt for a smaller size.
- Medical Reasons – Health concerns about breast implants may be the impetus for some women to have them removed. Implants don’t last forever. The recommended replacement or removal of implants is every 10-15 years. Capsular contracture, or scar tissue, around the implants can cause pain and discomfort. The implant may leak or rupture. An implant may move or shift over time, causing asymmetry of the breasts. Even women who haven’t experienced complications may just want to avoid future issues with their implants. Some women may simply want to eliminate the added strain and discomfort that large implants can cause on their neck and shoulders.
- Lifestyle Changes – Changes in lifestyle may prompt some women to consider implant removal. Their implants may no longer fit their current body image or habits. Large implants may hinder the type of physical activities a woman may want to pursue. Women may feel their implants are too heavy or bothersome. Pregnancy or weight fluctuations can negatively affect how implants look and feel. A smaller breast size could make it easier for some women to find clothing that fits well.
