Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has several applications in plastic surgery and cosmetic skin procedures. PRP treatments use the patient’s own blood cells to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to rejuvenate the skin and improve texture. These treatments are safe and well-tolerated since the blood comes from the patient.
So how does it work? A small sample of the patient’s blood is spun through a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other blood components. PRP is then injected into targeted areas to re-energize cells.
How does Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center use PRP?
There are three ways we currently use PRP at Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center:
- Scalp injections for hair follicle rejuvenation
- Undereye injections to restore plumpness and reduce dark circles
- Microneedling facials (such as AquaGold®) for skin renewal and addressing common signs of aging
Hair Follicle Rejuvenation

Scalp injections utilize concentrated amounts of PRP in areas where hair has thinned. The procedure promotes hair regrowth and tissue regeneration. Treatments can address male pattern baldness and androgenic alopecia in females by stimulating dormant hair follicles and strengthening hair following hair transplants. Ideal candidates are people with mild to moderate hair thinning or early hair loss. There is little to no downtime. Visible hair growth generally becomes noticeable after 3-6 months. Maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain growth.
Treatment of Undereye Area
The delicate undereye area is one of the first parts of the face to show signs of aging. PRP is an effective treatment for reducing undereye hollows, wrinkles, crepiness, and dark circles. Although not a filler, PRP injections stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin to smooth and tighten skin. Hollowed areas appear more plump, and dark undereye circles diminish. Patients ultimately achieve a more refreshed, rejuvenated, and youthful appearance.
Undereye injections are made more comfortable with topical numbing cream. Side effects can include tenderness, mild redness or bruising, swelling, and puffiness at the injection site. These reactions generally subside within a week.
Facial Treatments – AquaGold®
PRP is used during microneedling treatments or AquaGold® facials as a full face and neck boosting serum. AquaGold® is a patented microinjector with 24K gold-plated needles that create channels thinner than a human hair. Custom blended therapeutic solutions are delivered into the dermis layer of skin to address a variety of skin issues including fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, large pores, acne scars, skin texture, and skin dehydration. Therapeutics may include a combination of retinol, growth factor, PRP, vitamins, antioxidants, micro Botox, and dilute hyaluronic fillers. These treatments soften lines, improve skin texture, and leave skin supple and hydrated.
