Are you living with droopy eyelids that make you look tired or older? Is your field of vision somewhat diminished due to the drooping?  Even worse, is only one eyelid drooping, giving you an asymmetrical appearance that is embarrassing? This condition is called acquired ptosis.

Low-lying eyelids (acquired ptosis) causes the upper eyelids to droop or sag over the eye. The muscle that should lift the eyelid no longer works as it should.  Although people can be born with the condition, it may happen later in life. The cause can be neurological, or it can be due to long-term contact lens use, eye irritation, or aging.  One or both eyes may be affected. Significant drooping may limit or block vision.

Surgical Option

Upper eyelid surgery can address severe drooping. Dr. Keusch can make small incisions along the folds of the upper eyelid and remove sagging or heavy tissue. Not only will this surgery enhance the appearance, but it improves the field of vision.  When an upper eyelid lift is necessary to restore function, insurance will often cover the procedure.

Non-surgical Option

What are the options for people whose eyelids mildly droop but not severely enough to obscure their vision? What about people who would just like to see a cosmetic improvement that makes them look younger, less tired, and more refreshed? Unlike traditional surgical interventions, Upneeq® uses a pharmacological approach. This prescription eyedrop is a non-invasive treatment for acquired ptosis in adults. The eyedrop works by stimulating the Mueller’s muscle in the upper eyelid to contract and lift to its natural position. More of the iris and white of the eye becomes visible within 5 to 10 minutes of use. Effects vary from person to person but can last up to eight hours.

Upneeq® is an FDA approved option for treating drooping eyelids without the need for surgery. Not only are the patient’s aesthetic concerns addressed, but their field of vision will also be improved. If Dr. Keusch determines the patient will benefit from Upneeq® treatment, the initial treatment drops will be administered in the office, where patient response to the drops and their results can be evaluated.
