Many individuals are bothered by thin, skimpy eyelashes. Even people who once enjoyed long, lush lashes that enhanced their eyes and framed their face may have noticed a change over time. Although they may have gone the route of using false eyelashes or extensions, others find those options don’t work well for them. These false lashes can be difficult to apply correctly, and some people may have allergies to the lashes themselves or the adhesives. So, is there another option, or are people stuck with their skimpy lashes?
What causes skimpy lashes?
Unfortunately, a major factor in thinning eyelashes is aging. The problem often starts in middle age, due to hormonal changes. Loss of estrogen makes the hair follicles weaker. Consequently, lashes become thinner, shorter, and more brittle. They tend to lose their upward curvature. Eyelashes become less noticeable as they lose color pigment, along with the rest of our hair.
There are other factors that can influence our eyelash growth. Our genetics, medical conditions, certain medications, and even vitamin deficiencies can determine the condition of our lashes.
Is there a medical treatment that can help?
Latisse® is an FDA approved treatment designed to produce longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes. It’s available as a prescription eyedrop. The active ingredient in Latisse, bimatoprost, was originally developed as a treatment for glaucoma. The medication was incidentally found to grow eyelashes in these glaucoma patients. Latisse is a cosmetic concentration of bimatoprost that is approved for eyelash growth.
How do I use Latisse?
Latisse is easy to use at home as part of a nightly routine. One drop of Latisse is applied to a sterile applicator and rubbed along the skin at the base of the upper lash line, working from the inner part of the lash line to the outer part. Dispose of that applicator and use a fresh applicator to apply the solution to the other eyelid. Each applicator is meant for a one-time use to prevent contamination. Dr. Keusch recommends applying Latisse at bedtime, after removing all makeup and contact lenses. The product should be used for 16 weeks, although some results may be seen in 8-12 weeks.
Are there side effects?
The most common side effects are dry or watery eyes. There may be a slight swelling, itching, or burning of the eyelids. These side effects are mild and will go away after the treatment is discontinued. Latisse is not recommended for use in patients with an eye infection, glaucoma, and those who have eye allergies or other eye conditions.
