Major weight loss is a significant accomplishment that should make people proud.  It requires hard work and is usually achieved through considerable lifestyle changes over a lengthy period of time.  One of the many positive effects of weight loss is a boost in self-confidence.  However, a natural consequence of dramatic weight loss is excess sagging skin.  Skin laxity, or skin that has lost its firmness, structure, and elasticity, is difficult to tone through diet and exercise.

Upper Body Skin Laxity

Skin laxity in the upper body area can affect both men and women.  Skin folds and rolls of excess skin can extend from the upper back to the sides of the chest under the arms.  Women often refer to this as “back fat”, since it is more pronounced along the bra line.  Men may see more problems in the “love handle” area.  This extra loose skin can negatively affect how clothing fits.

A Surgical Solution

An upper body lift is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and rolls of stubborn fat to give the body a more contoured appearance.  This creates a slimmer and streamlined profile that looks younger and more toned.  Liposuction can remove stubborn pockets of upper back fat that haven’t responded well to exercise.  However, liposuction alone doesn’t address sagging skin and skin laxity.  Other cosmetic procedures can be combined with an upper body lift including an arm lift or a breast lift.

Are there visible scars?

There will be some scarring from an upper body lift, but for most women, the incision will be hidden under their bra.  For men, the incisions are harder to conceal.  However, the trade-off is a smoother, more toned back and clothing that fits better.

What is recovery like?

The recovery period for an upper body lift is 6-8 weeks.  Initially, movement will be minimized and heavy lifting is restricted.  Most patients will be able to return to work in 1-2 weeks, depending on their job duties.  Dr. Keusch may clear the patient to resume normal exercise at around 6 weeks post-surgery.

Patients should expect some initial swelling and bruising, but they will quickly notice their body appears sleeker and more contoured.  Results can be life changing!
