For all the interest that surrounds women wanting to augment the size of their breasts, there are some women who feel the need to actually reduce the size of their breasts.  Smaller framed women may feel their breasts are out of proportion for their body size.  These women may have spent years burdened with large, heavy breasts that have caused them problems.  For these women, breast reduction surgery can be transformational.

Reasons to Consider Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that can reduce the size and change the shape of the breasts.  There are a number of reasons why women would consider breast reduction.  They may have had difficulty finding bras and clothing that fit their body correctly, making them self-conscious about what they wear.  They might be living with chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain and developed grooves in their shoulders from bra straps.  Trying to hold up heavy breasts may have negatively affected posture.  Exercise, daily activities, and even sleeping may be uncomfortable for these women, not to mention dealing with rash or skin irritation under the breasts.  Women who have dealt with these challenges may be looking for some relief.

The Procedure and Recovery

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia.  Dr. Keusch will remove breast fat, glandular tissue, and excess skin.  The breast is reshaped and lifted to a smaller size more in proportion to the body’s frame.  The nipple and areola can be reduced, if necessary.  Any asymmetry between the breasts can be corrected.  Patients should expect some scarring, although Dr. Keusch will try to minimize it.

Some patients also elect to have breast implants, if needed.  When there is not enough breast tissue to achieve a natural look, implants can provide fullness and prevent upper breast hollowness that sometimes occurs following a reduction.  Having both procedures together means the patient will just have one recovery period.

The first week post-surgery is for recovery and rest.  Compression garments are worn to help ease post-op swelling and bruising.  Most patients can return to work in one or two weeks, depending on their job duties.  Strenuous activities can be resumed in 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Transformational Results

Most patients will see initial results immediately after surgery.  Breasts will be smaller and lighter, and patients may notice immediate relief from the back, neck, or shoulder pain and heaviness they may have experienced before surgery.  Final results are visible in about six months, after all swelling has subsided.
