Laser resurfacing treatments are often considered when looking for ways to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, acne scarring, or diminish sun damage, age spots, or hyperpigmentation.  Laser treatments can transform the complexion, delivering results that unveil smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

There are two main types of lasers used for skin resurfacing – ablative and nonablative.  It is important to understand how they work and what to expect, so that you can determine what is appropriate for you.  The brand names of these lasers can be very similar, which is sometimes confusing.  Two lasers which sound similar in name can work quite differently.

What to Expect from Ablative Lasers

Ablative laser treatments go to the deepest layer of skin, the dermis.  The laser uses targeted beams of laser energy to vaporize the top layers of skin, revealing healthy new skin below.  The recovery period is long, and healing can take 4-6 weeks.  Most people need just one treatment, and their results can be dramatic.

What to Expect from Nonablative Lasers

Don’t be Confused by Names.

At Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center, we have a new Lutronic Ultra™ 1927nm Thulium Laser.  It is a nonablative laser that is safe for all skin types.  In addition to skin treatments, this laser is effective in treating hair loss and bald spots.

A laser with a similar name is the UltraClear® Laser.  We do not offer this laser at Boca Raton Plastic Surgery Center.  This is an ablative laser that is much different from our Lutronic Ultra™ 1927nm Thulium Laser.  It is a completely different machine.

We do offer an ablative laser resurfacing treatment called Fraxel® re:pair.  This is a CO2 laser that uses fractional technology.  There is more downtime with stronger results.  This treatment is only performed under full anesthesia.

The Fraxel® re:pair laser is an excellent option for patients wanting to address uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and crepey skin.  The laser works on a small fraction of skin at one time, while surrounding tissue remains healthy.  Healing usually takes 10-12 days, although redness may persist longer.
