Lymphatic massage, also known as lymphatic drainage massage, is a specialized type of massage that is designed to rid the body of excess fluid that collects after surgery, trauma, or some medical conditions.  The mild pressure used in lymphatic massage helps remove trapped fluid and reduces swelling, or edema.  Bacteria and wastes are also flushed out, enabling the body to better fight infection.  This is particularly useful in promoting the healing process after complex surgery.

Is lymphatic massage the same as a regular massage or sports massage?

There are key differences between lymphatic massage and other types of massage therapy.  Regular massage uses deep pressure to work the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in order to reduce stiffness, relax tight muscles, and improve range of motion and flexibility.  Lymphatic massage only requires a light to medium pressure since the lymphatic system is close to the skin’s surface.  No lotions or oils are needed on the skin.  Lymph nodes, blood vessels, and capillaries are massaged in a certain sequence so that excess fluid is returned to the body’s circulatory system to be removed.  Gentle pressure is exerted and then released.  The rhythmic motion should feel soothing.

Which plastic surgery patients can benefit from lymphatic massage?

Patients who have received complex procedures involving large areas can benefit from lymphatic massage.  In many cases, lymphatic massage is a crucial part of the recovery process.  Examples of these procedures include liposuction, tummy tucks, arm lifts, thigh lifts, butt lifts, breast augmentation, breast reduction, facelifts, and neck lifts.  Lymphatic massage can greatly improve recovery and final results for these patients.
