Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that will restore the body’s natural contours by removing unwanted fat. The ideal candidate for liposuction has pockets of stubborn fat that they have been unable to eliminate through diet and exercise. In the weeks following liposuction, the patient can expect results that include a sleeker, more contoured appearance with noticeable loss of inches in the treated areas. Many patients consider liposuction to target problem areas of the body including the abdomen and waistline, hips (love handles), thighs, buttocks, upper arms, and back.
How is liposuction performed?
In traditional liposuction, the surgeon makes small incisions in the areas where fat will be removed. A thin hollow tube, called a cannula, is inserted through the incision and moved back and forth to break up the excess fat. Some surgeons use a power-assisted or ultrasound-assisted technique to create vibrations that help the cannula dislodge the fat. Dr. Keusch uses SmartLipo®, which combines laser treatment to help melt the fat and tighten skin. The fat is then suctioned out using an attachment on the cannula.
Why is compression necessary after the procedure?
Compression is a necessary part of the recovery process. The use of the cannula causes trauma to the tissues. Special compression garments help reduce swelling, bruising, and inflammation at the treatment site. The compression garments provide targeted pressure and support to the areas that have been treated. Compression itself promotes circulation, lymphatic drainage, more rapid wound healing, and helps reduce the risks of blood clots and infection. During the recovery period with the compression, loose skin is also shrinking and contracting.
What is special about the compression garments?
The garments are generally provided to the patient post-surgery. They are made of strong, yet flexible elastic fabric that is designed to allow for stretch while maintaining the necessary pressure. Garments and wraps come in different sizes and are designed to fit the abdomen, legs, arms, and other parts of the body where liposuction was performed. They are meant to be worn under clothing 24/7 except for showering.
How long the patient wears the compression garments can vary, but the general rule is for 4-6 weeks following liposuction. The surgeon will schedule regular follow-up appointments to assess swelling and recovery, making necessary adjustments in the size and scheduled wearing of the garments.
What happens if the compression garments are not consistently worn?
Failure to wear the compression garments as instructed by the physician can lead to increased swelling, higher risk of infection, and uneven results.
