Flabby upper arms are an embarrassment to many people.  They refuse to be seen sleeveless or in a swimsuit.  They may have tried to tone their arms, but diet and exercise haven’t been enough.  So they hide their arms under long sleeves, even in the hot south Florida weather.

A Cosmetic Surgery Solution

There is a surgical option to address sagging upper arms called brachioplasty, or arm lift.  This surgery will contour and shape the upper arms by removing excess skin and localized pockets of fat.  Liposuction may be performed as part of the procedure.  Supportive tissue will also be tightened.  The results are more youthful, toned arms that can be a real confidence booster.

What causes flabby arms?

The loss of skin elasticity in the upper arms may be part of the natural aging process, or it may be due to genetics for some people.  It is also quite common after a dramatic weight loss or gastric bypass surgery.  It’s a condition that can impact both women and men.

What is an arm lift procedure like?

Brachioplasty surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, so the patient will need to have a driver.  The surgeon uses an underarm incision for the procedure.  The incision may be noticeable, but the surgeon will minimize it as much as possible.  Patient satisfaction for this procedure is high, and significant results are visible right away.

What is recovery like?

Post-operative swelling and bruising are normal.  Compression garments are often needed, and some patients may have small, temporary drains to prevent fluid from building up.  For the first month post-surgery, patients must avoid strenuous exercise, lifting more than five pounds, and raising their arms.  Care should be taken during the healing process to protect the scar from sun exposure.  Full recovery generally takes four to six weeks, with most patients able to return to work in one to two weeks.

Are results permanent?

Results can be long lasting if the patient maintains a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.  An arm lift does not prevent future sagging due to aging or additional weight gain or loss.
