Breast Reconstruction – Helping You Get Your Breasts Back

Breast reconstruction is a type of surgery used to reconstruct a breast after a mastectomy (surgical removal of breasts), lumpectomy, or radiation therapy. Breast reconstruction is performed with a single goal in mind: to help restore the appearance of a patient’s breasts so that she feels more confident about herself, especially after such a life-changing procedure.

Our breast reconstruction surgery is performed with all the care and consideration that these patients deserve, so you can expect that your comfort will be prioritized above all else.

How Does Breast Reconstruction Work?

Breast reconstruction takes place over many stages; in general, the procedure may be performed with implants or tissue expanders, or with one’s own tissues. The procedure may be started at the time of mastectomy, or at a later time. Breast reconstruction can be performed on one or both breasts. All reconstructive procedures are tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Breast Reconstruction?

You’re a good candidate for breast reconstruction if you’ve recently had a mastectomy or lumpectomy, and you want to regain your breasts so you can feel more confident and whole again. Ideal candidates will have enough fatty tissue and skin to support this surgery. All patients should be nonsmokers with realistic expectations for their procedure.

What Results Will I See?*

Most patients can see initial results immediately after surgery, as your new breast shape will be visible underneath the surgical bandages. The majority of swelling and bruising will be present for about two months after surgery, with minor swelling still present about six months to a year after the procedure. By the end of your recovery, your new breasts can make you look and feel like yourself again.

What is the Recovery Like?*

The brunt of your recovery process will take place over six to eight weeks. During the first week or so, you should expect to spend plenty of time resting and recuperating at home. We recommend having a good support system in place at home, as your movements will be limited. You may also want to invest in a comfortable recliner, as it’s not advised to sleep on your side or stomach. You may be cleared to return to work after the first or second week, depending on the nature of your job. After the fourth week, you may be able to wear normal bras as opposed to surgical compression bras. You may be cleared for physical activity at the six-week mark, depending on your doctor’s advice.
