women after breast lift surgery

Breast lift surgery is a procedure that will lift, contour, and tighten sagging breasts.  The procedure produces long-lasting results that transform the silhouette.  The uplifted and more youthful profile helps patients feel more confident about their appearance.

What causes the breasts to droop?

Breasts often change after significant life events such as pregnancy and breastfeeding.  Weight fluctuations can also negatively affect breast tissue.  Women are likely to experience some sagginess as they age.  Genetics may play a role, but breast tissue naturally loses elasticity and supporting ligaments stretch.  Although women with large and heavy breasts are more prone to sagging over time, even women with smaller breasts may experience some droopiness.

Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery

While a breast lift will not increase breast size, women may feel that the surgery offers a number of benefits including:

  • Enhances breast shape for a firmer, more youthful appearance
  • May reduce extra weight on the chest
  • Improves posture
  • Can reduce neck, shoulder, and back pain from supporting heavy breasts
  • Removes excess skin and reduces the size of the areola
  • Raises the position of the nipples
  • Improves breast symmetry
  • Lessens skin irritation under the breasts

Downtime and Recovery

Patients should expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgery.  There may be small drainage tubes placed near the incisions to drain off extra fluid.  A special bra must be worn to reduce swelling and give extra support through the healing process.  Patients generally need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks post-surgery.  Some patients may be cleared to return to work after 2 weeks, depending on their job duties.
