Women with contoured chin

There are two main reasons that prompt patients to consider chin contouring.  Some are embarrassed or self-conscious about having a double chin.  They may feel it makes them look older or heavier than they really are.  Diet and exercise have not produced desired results.  They want a slimmer profile, but they don’t want surgery.

Other patients have noticed that their chin and jawline have lost volume and definition as they age.  The chin and jowls have begun to look soft and saggy.  They may be looking to improve the appearance of a weak chin and achieve more balance in their face.  This group may also seek non-surgical options.

There are non-surgical treatments to meet the needs of those on both sides of the chin contouring spectrum.  Kybella® is a recommended treatment for a double chin, and dermal fillers work well for chin augmentation and contouring.

Kybella®

Kybella® is an FDA approved, targeted treatment to reduce a double chin.  This area of fat is very hard to get rid of, and doesn’t respond well to diet and exercise.  Injections of a synthetic deoxycholic acid dissolve these troublesome pockets of fat underneath the chin and around the jawline.  Once the fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat.  The dissolved fat is eliminated from the body through the kidneys and intestines.  Results are permanent.

Kybella® treatments take about twenty minutes.  The number of injections used depends on the amount of fat.  Side effects are mild and don’t usually interfere with normal activities.  Patients may experience some redness, swelling, a burning sensation, and mild bruising.  This generally resolves in a few days.  Patients may need up to six treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve desired results.

The patient should be a healthy individual whose weight is stable and as close to their realistic baseline weight as possible.  Liposuction and SmartLipo are not weight loss alternatives.  Liposuction doesn’t remove cellulite dimpling or stretch marks.
