Are you embarrassed by saggy upper arm skin that hangs down or jiggles when you lift your arms? Do flabby upper arms want to make you hide them in long sleeves? Have you tried to tone your arms, but diet and exercise haven’t produced the desired results? Then an arm lift, or brachioplasty surgery, may be an option worth considering.
What causes upper arm skin to sag?
Skin naturally loses some of its elasticity as we age. It happens to both women and men. Sometimes genetics plays a role. For others, losing a lot of weight may contribute to the sagginess. The skin stretches over time when weight is gained. When the weight is lost, the skin may not have enough elasticity to return to its former state. Arm lift surgery can contour and reshape the back part of the upper arm from the elbow to the armpit.
What happens during arm lift surgery?
Dr. Keusch will make an incision and remove extra tissue and fat. Underlying supporting tissue will be tightened and smoothed out. Localized fat pockets can be reduced. Liposuction may also be used to remove fatty deposits and achieve a more toned appearance. Then the incision is closed with stitches. Arm lift surgery will leave a scar, but it will be minimized as much as possible. Proper wound care following surgery helps the scar to become less visible over time.
How long does recovery take?
Full recovery generally takes four to six weeks. During this period, patients will have regular follow up visits with Dr. Keusch. Since post-operative swelling and bruising are normal, compression garments are often needed. Some patients may have small, temporary drains to prevent fluid from building up. Most people will be able to return to work in one to two weeks. However, strenuous exercise must be avoided for the first month as well as lifting more than five pounds. Patients will need to be careful raising their arms, and the incision should be protected from sun exposure.
Benefits of Brachioplasty Surgery
Patients will see significant improvement in their arms right away. Results are typically long lasting, as long as the patient maintains a stable weight. Arm lift surgery helps people feel more confident and happy with their more contoured arms.
