Many people are embarrassed by sagging upper arms and jiggly excess skin that makes them want to hide their arms.  They may feel so self-conscious they won’t wear sleeveless garments or a swimsuit.  They’ve tried diet and exercise to no avail.  But there is a surgical option called an arm lift, or brachioplasty, they may want to consider.  This procedure can help restore the more youthful appearance of their arms and restore their self-confidence.

What causes droopy upper arm skin?

Skin laxity may come about as part of the aging process.  It is often the result of the person having lost a significant amount of weight.  Exercise doesn’t help tone skin that has lost its elasticity.  The extra folds of skin may not only be unsightly, but they can cause a hygiene issue.  The folds may become inflamed, or the person may even develop a rash.

How can an arm lift help?

An arm lift surgery will contour and reshape the upper arms from the underarm region to the elbow.  The surgery will tighten, tone, and lift the upper arm.  Excess skin, tissue, and fat deposits will be removed.  The length of the underarm incision will depend on how much skin needs to be removed.  The surgeon will place the incision so that the scar will not be too noticeable.  The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia.

What type of recovery should be expected?

Some swelling and bruising should be expected.  The arms may be wrapped in elastic bandages or compression garments to minimize swelling.  A small tube may be temporarily placed in the arms to drain excess fluid.  The patient should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise during the recovery period.  Full recovery may take 4-6 weeks.

Are results permanent?

Results are noticeable immediately.  They are long lasting as long as the patient doesn’t gain or lose significant weight.  Aging skin is always subject to some amount of laxity.

Who is a good candidate for arm contouring?

A good candidate will be an adult with noticeable upper arm skin laxity who is not overweight.  Their weight should be stable.  They should be in good overall health and a non-smoker.  Their expectations for results should be realistic.
