Stubborn pockets of back fat can be a problem for both women and men. These are those annoying areas of fat that just don’t respond to our efforts of dieting and exercise. Genetics, diet, and lifestyle factors can determine where body fat is deposited. For women, the back fat problem may actually become more noticeable when wearing a bra. The fat pockets on the upper torso and sides are often referred to as a bra line bulge or bra roll fat. Back fat in men can be a problem in the upper back or in the “love handle” area. Liposuction versus SmartLipo
Most people are familiar with liposuction, a cosmetic surgical procedure that can remove fat deposits permanently. A surgical instrument, called a cannula, is inserted through an incision to scape the fat away from the skin so it can be suctioned out. Following the procedure, the patient can expect some swelling and bruising. A compression garment must be worn for several weeks as the swelling gradually subsides. The end result is a slimmer, more contoured body profile.
SmartLipo is a newer, less intense procedure. SmartLipo is minimally invasive; tiny incisions are used. Fat is not scraped from the skin. A micro-cannula with laser is inserted under the skin, where heat energy from the laser melts the fat cells. The liquified fat is then suctioned out. An added benefit for SmartLipo is that the heat from the laser tightens skin and stimulates collagen production. The skin will look smoother, firmer, and younger.
Advantages of SmartLipo
SmartLipo is performed under local anesthesia. This reduces the risk of complications related to general anesthesia. The procedure is less painful than traditional liposuction, so less post-surgery pain medication is needed. There is less bleeding and bruising with SmartLipo. The patient has a shorter downtime following the procedure and may be back to work in a few days. A compression garment may still need to be worn but swelling gradually resolves in about two weeks. SmartLipo results in a more contoured body profile with somewhat tighter skin tone.
